At what age do Krishnamurti (KFI) schools admit children, and do they interview parents?
It varies by school. The School KFI admits at LKG; The Valley School at Class 1; Rajghat Besant at Class III; Rishi Valley and Sahyadri at Class 4; Pathashaala at Class 5. Check each date-of-birth band, not your child’s age.
Which KFI school takes which age?
There is no single KFI admission age, and that is the first thing most families get wrong. The six schools run different entry points, so the question is not "when do KFI schools admit" but "which KFI school admits at my child’s stage". Only one of them has a pre-primary intake at all.

Work from the date-of-birth band rather than your child’s age today. The School KFI is the only one with a pre-primary intake, but a five-year-old is not confined to it: The Valley School’s Class I band for the current cycle covers children born between 1 August 2020 and 1 August 2021, so many eligible applicants are still five when they apply. For a child of eight or nine, the residential schools open up. Applying to Rishi Valley for LKG, on the other hand, is an application to a class that does not exist.
Do they interview the child or the parents?
Practice differs by school, so check the one you are applying to. The Valley School is the most explicit: it emails interaction dates to shortlisted applicants in advance, and states plainly:

That phrasing is deliberate. KFI schools select for a shared educational outlook as much as for a child, so a parent who cannot say why they want a non-competitive, non-ranking environment is a poor fit regardless of the child. Treat it as a two-way conversation about philosophy, not an entrance test.
What the application calendar looks like
- Windows are short and firm. The Valley School’s Class 1 forms for 2027–28 closed on 7 August 2026 at 4:00 pm — not a rolling deadline.
- Age is set by a date-of-birth band, not a school year. The Valley School’s Class 1 window covers children born 1 August 2020 to 1 August 2021.
- Later entry is harder. Class 11 at The Valley School takes about 40 students, with stated preference for current and other KFI students and for full boarders.
- Independent feedback is thin — The Valley School holds 4.2/5 across 226 Justdial ratings, a small evidence base for a decision this size.
- Can I get my child into a KFI school at age 5?
- Yes, in two ways. The School KFI runs an LKG–12 span and requires a child to be at least 3 years 6 months on 1 June of the admission year, so five is comfortably inside its range. The Valley School’s Class I date-of-birth band (born 1 August 2020 to 1 August 2021 for the current cycle) also includes children who are still five at application. Match your child’s date of birth to each school’s published band rather than assuming an age cut-off.
- Is the parent interaction a selection interview?
- The Valley School does not describe it as a test, but attendance is compulsory for shortlisted applicants and forms part of the process. Expect questions about your reasons for choosing the school.
- Do all six KFI schools follow the same admissions process?
- No. They share an educational philosophy but run their own calendars, entry points and selection steps. Confirm each school directly rather than assuming a common foundation-wide policy.
