There is no Indian registry that certifies a school as genuinely project-based. A PBL label therefore proves no more than a Montessori, progressive or experiential label: the evidence has to be visible in what children do, how teachers respond and how learning is assessed.

What genuine project-based learning looks like

A CBSE science teacher handbook gives a useful observable definition. It describes PBL around an open-ended driving question, essential content, sustained inquiry, critical thinking and collaboration, student voice, feedback and revision, and a publicly presented product or performance. That is guidance for pedagogy, not proof that every CBSE or alternative school implements it.

The rows below show that a current public description and, where available, independent documentation exist. They do not establish that every class is equally strong, that the model suits your child or that the school produces better outcomes.

What is publicly documented and what a parent should still request

Heritage, Riverside and StayQrious pages support their own programme descriptions and fees only. Edutopia provides independent documentation of Riverside's project practice. None of these sources proves universal learning outcomes, so this is deliberately a verification list rather than a "best PBL schools" ranking.

The delivery model changes the evidence you should inspect

A PowerPoint about the water cycle is not automatically PBL. For an online programme, ask to see how a child gathers original evidence, makes an individual contribution, receives critique, revises the work and interacts with someone beyond the class. Also ask what must happen off-screen and who organises it.

What the research does - and does not - show

A 2023 Frontiers in Psychology meta-analysis converted 66 experimental or quasi-experimental papers into 190 effect values. Its random-effects result was positive overall, with the strongest pooled duration at 9-18 weeks and strongest pooled group size at 4-5 learners. Heterogeneity was high, so those averages are design clues, not a promise about a particular school.

A separate randomised field experiment with Indian middle-school students tested design-thinking training, not a whole PBL school. It found higher ideational fluency and elaboration, while originality and flexibility were lower on average; confidence gains were concentrated among girls. It did not test board marks, college admission or long-term outcomes.

PBL and Indian board exams are separate design problems

PBL can deepen understanding, but Class 10 and 12 examinations also reward syllabus coverage, recall, timed writing and familiarity with the marking scheme. Eight checks before believing a school's PBL claim

Driving question: Ask for one current project brief. Is the question genuinely open-ended?
Subject map: Which exact maths, science, language and humanities objectives does it teach?
Student work: Request an anonymised first draft, feedback and revised version - not only the final showcase.
Individual evidence: In group work, how does the teacher know what each child understood and contributed?
Rubric: Does assessment separate content knowledge, inquiry, collaboration, communication and product quality?
Authentic audience: Who outside the teaching team questioned, tested or used the result?
Time and logistics: How many weekly hours, materials, trips and parent-supported tasks are required?
Board route: Which institution registers the learner, where are external exams taken, and when does timed exam practice start?
