How to Vet an Online School in India: 12 Checks

Before paying an online school in India, verify who registers the child for a recognised Class 10 or 12 qualification, confirm that claim on the awarding body's official directory, and get fees, refunds, teaching hours and exam responsibilities in writing.

Treat teaching and certification as two separate services. A provider may teach well without being the institution that registers students or issues certificates. Ask four names first: who teaches, who registers the learner, who awards the qualification, and which centre conducts any in-person exams.

What exactly are you buying: teaching or a board place?

Do not accept phrases such as “CBSE curriculum”, “Cambridge pathway”, “international accreditation” or “NIOS support” as answers. A curriculum describes what may be taught; it does not prove that this provider can register your child for a particular examination. Ask for the exact qualification name, awarding body, registration route and exam centre before discussing teaching style.

The answer may be legitimate without the teaching provider itself holding school affiliation. For example, NIOS says learners can register online directly, while an Accredited Institution provides separate support services. Cambridge also distinguishes schools from approved exam centres, which administer exams but do not provide teaching. The arrangement is only usable when every role is named and independently checkable.

Verify five credential routes on the issuer's own directory

Match the directory entry to the contracting provider character by character. Check the campus, programme level and current status, not just a similar brand name. Foreign-board online study needs an India-equivalence check

Authenticity and Indian eligibility are different questions. Cambridge says its finder covers more than 10,000 schools in over 160 countries, including online schools. The IB says its fully online Diploma Programme began as a pilot with selected partners in March 2022. Either listing can verify the provider's relationship with the awarding body; neither, by itself, promises admission to a particular Indian university or entrance route.

AIU's advisory dated 5 September 2022 says it did not consider Cambridge International or Pearson/Edexcel qualifications delivered through online or home schooling for equivalence. Before choosing such a route for a child who may study in India, ask AIU and the intended universities or examination authorities for the current position in writing. Do not rely on a school's generic “globally recognised” claim.

Use this 12-point evidence checklist before paying

Read the refund and withdrawal guide before accepting an annual-payment discount. A cheaper annual fee is not cheaper if the timetable is a poor fit and most of the payment is non-refundable.

A normal live class reveals more than a sales demo

Ask to observe a full, ordinary lesson in your child's intended grade. Record how long the teacher talks, how students ask questions, whether work receives feedback, how many learners actually attend, and what happens when a child is confused. Then let the child try the platform before an annual commitment if the provider permits it.

Request one complete week, not just daily live-class hours: synchronous lessons, required recordings, homework, projects, assessments and parent supervision. Fit is child-specific. A highly structured timetable can help one learner and exhaust another; a flexible asynchronous model can create freedom or leave a family supplying most of the structure. The right evidence is the real timetable, a real class and your child's response—not the number of features on the sales page.

Keep a payment evidence pack before enrolment

1. Save the dated official-directory result, brochure, fee schedule and every accreditation or registration claim.
2. Save the signed agreement, refund policy, invoice and payment confirmation under the same contracting-entity name.
3. Email your understanding of the certificate issuer, registration deadline, exam centre and total cost; ask the provider to correct or confirm it.
4. After enrolment, obtain learner-facing board evidence on the promised date rather than accepting a provider dashboard as a substitute.
5. If a service dispute is not resolved by the provider, the Government of India's National Consumer Helpline accepts document-backed grievances online or through 1915 as a pre-litigation step.

If the provider cannot make the certification chain understandable before payment, pause. A credible answer can be complicated—especially for NIOS or a private-candidate route—but it should still be specific, documented and independently verifiable.

Frequently asked questions

Is an online school recognised in India?

There is no useful yes-or-no answer based only on the words “online school”. Identify who awards the Class 10 or 12 qualification, verify the school, study centre or exam route on that body's official system, and separately check the current eligibility rules for the learner's intended Indian university or entrance exam.

Is following the CBSE curriculum the same as CBSE affiliation?

No. A provider can use CBSE or NCERT-aligned material without being a CBSE-affiliated school. If direct CBSE affiliation is claimed, search the exact school and campus in the CBSE SARAS directory and check its current status and level.

Must my NIOS tutor appear as a NIOS study centre?

Not merely to provide private tutoring. NIOS says learners can register online directly, while Accredited Institutions provide defined support services. If a provider claims to be a NIOS AI or study centre, verify its AI code in the NIOS locator. In every case, the learner should receive an enrolment number and identity card from NIOS itself after confirmation.

Is a Cambridge online-school listing enough for Indian college admission?

No. The Cambridge finder can confirm the provider's status with Cambridge, but Indian equivalence and course eligibility are separate. AIU published a 2022 warning about Cambridge and Pearson qualifications delivered online or through home study, so obtain the current position from AIU and the intended institution in writing.

What should I receive before paying an annual online-school fee?

At minimum: a verifiable qualification route, registration and exam-responsibility timeline, complete annual cost, grade-specific timetable, signed refund and withdrawal terms, and a description of records supplied on exit. Ask to observe a normal class before paying if possible.

What if the provider refuses to give an affiliation number?

If it claims direct school affiliation, do not treat the claim as verified without a matching official record. If it says it is only a teaching provider, ask it to name the separate institution that registers the learner and confirm that arrangement with the institution itself.

How much screen time should an online school require?

There is no single number that fits every age, need or learning model. Get the full weekly live, recorded and homework load, then test it with your child. Also count tutoring and recreational use outside school, and ask what meaningful offline work replaces screen-facing tasks.

Can I recover fees if the online school does not deliver?
