What Is the On-Demand Exam (ODE)?
The NIOS ODE is a computer-based test (CBT) available at designated NIOS exam centres across India. Unlike the Public Examination, which requires students to sit all their subjects in a fixed April or October window, the ODE lets students schedule individual subjects on dates that work for them. This is particularly useful if you want to spread your subjects across several months, or if you missed the traditional exam cycle.
Note: Not all NIOS subjects are available as ODE. Core subjects like Hindi, English, and Social Science are generally available; practical-heavy subjects may not be. Who Is Eligible for NIOS ODE?
- Students already registered with NIOS for Class 10 (Secondary) or Class 12 (Senior Secondary) as an Admitted Student (ALS) or Direct Admission student.
- Students who have failed or were absent in one or more subjects in a previous NIOS Public Examination (ODE is often used for compartment or improvement).
- Students using the Transfer of Credit (TOC) facility, who have recognised marks from another board and are filling in remaining subjects via NIOS.
How to Register for NIOS ODE
Registration for ODE is done online through the NIOS student portal (sdmis.nios.ac.in). You must already have an active NIOS enrolment number. From your student dashboard, you select the subjects you want to attempt via ODE, choose an exam centre and date from the available slots, and pay the applicable ODE fees (currently higher than the standard Public Exam fee — check the latest fee schedule on the NIOS portal as these are updated periodically).

- Is the ODE certificate identical to the Public Exam certificate?
- Yes. NIOS certificates do not distinguish between ODE and Public Exam routes. The final marksheet and certificate carry the same validity.
- What happens if I fail an ODE subject — can I re-appear?
- Yes. You can re-appear in ODE subjects in subsequent ODE cycles or switch to the Public Exam route, within the overall validity of your NIOS admission (typically 5 years from registration).
