Yes. A homeschooled learner in India can sit Cambridge IGCSE as a private candidate if a Cambridge school or approved provider agrees to enter the exact syllabus and option. Cambridge does not accept direct individual entries, and Indian equivalence needs separate written verification.

Find the exam venue before buying a curriculum or tutoring package. A provider that teaches Cambridge content online may have no approved exam venue, and an ordinary Cambridge school may decline outside candidates. The entering centre controls its own acceptance criteria, deadline and charges.

Step 0: read AIU's home-study warning before an India plan

The Association of Indian Universities issued an advisory on 5 September 2022 that remains available on its official site. It says AIU accords equivalence to foreign-board qualifications delivered face to face in a physical classroom and does not consider Cambridge or Pearson/Edexcel qualifications delivered through online or home schooling for equivalence.

The advisory does not say that every Cambridge private-candidate entry is automatically rejected, and Cambridge's current pages do not say that a private-candidate notation appears on the certificate. Cambridge says the entering centre's name does not appear on a private candidate's certificate. Do not turn either statement into a broader guarantee.

If Indian transfer, Class 11 admission, university admission or employment equivalence matters, send AIU and the target institution a precise description: where the learner studied, which centre will enter and host the exams, the syllabus codes, assessment options and intended qualification set. Ask whether equivalence is required and whether this route will be accepted. Save the reply before registration.

A teaching provider cannot solve this by promising a "regular" label. Only the actual Cambridge centre and responsible admission authority can document the learner's status and acceptance. If a clearly recognised Indian open-board route fits the goal better, compare NIOS, IGCSE and IB for homeschoolers before committing.

Step 1: choose the exact syllabus and assessment option

Do not ask a centre only for "IGCSE Chemistry" or "IGCSE English." Send the syllabus code, examination year, series and option. Cambridge requires private candidates to meet the full assessment requirements. Some options involving coursework or internally assessed work are unavailable because the centre cannot authenticate work it did not supervise.

That is not the same as saying private candidates can take only written subjects. Availability is syllabus- and option-specific. Some sciences offer an Alternative to Practical paper, while languages may require speaking components and other subjects can contain practical or pre-release work. Read the "Before you start" and assessment sections in the syllabus PDF, then ask the centre to confirm each component.

1. Write the qualification level, subject name and syllabus code.
2. Download the syllabus for the examination year, not a prior textbook list.
3. Record every paper, practical, speaking test, coursework or internally assessed component.
4. Check whether the private-candidate symbol or rule in that syllabus permits the selected option.
5. Ask the centre whether it runs every component in the chosen series and administrative zone.
6. For an India progression plan, verify the complete subject set and whether subjects must be taken in one series.

Step 2: choose March, June or November deliberately

Cambridge runs a March series used in India, alongside the international June and November series. Not every syllabus or option is offered in every series. The entering centre can also choose a smaller menu than Cambridge makes available, so series availability on a global page is not proof that one Indian centre will take the entry.

The published dates above are Cambridge deadlines for centres, not promises to candidates. A centre needs time for checks, payment, access arrangements and its own capacity planning. Contact several centres months ahead, especially for speaking, practical, modified-paper or access-arrangement needs.

Step 3: find an Indian centre that actually accepts you

Cambridge does not take an individual entry. Start with the official Cambridge school finder and approved-exam-centre page. The public approved-exam-centre table currently lists dedicated exam centres in only a few countries and does not list an Indian dedicated centre; Cambridge separately says private candidates can make entries through Cambridge International Schools.

A school appearing in the Cambridge directory proves its Cambridge status, not that it accepts external candidates. Contact the exams officer directly. Do not rely on a third-party directory, an old forum post or a teaching provider's claim without confirmation from the centre that will submit the entry.

Step 4: request a written fee, not an internet estimate

Cambridge charges centres per syllabus, but its current fee list is distributed through Cambridge International Direct rather than published as a universal rupee tariff. Cambridge says the centre may pass on the entry fee and add charges for supervision and other costs. The centre therefore controls the amount a private candidate pays.

There is no defensible India-wide ₹8,000, ₹15,000 or ₹25,000 per-subject figure without a dated centre quote. Remove exchange-rate guesswork from the decision: obtain the actual total for the syllabus, option and series you will enter.

Step 5: register through the centre and verify the entry

1. Submit identity, photograph, access-arrangement evidence and any other documents directly to the accepting centre.
2. Pay only after the centre confirms the syllabus code, option, series, venue and itemised total.
3. Ask for a receipt and the centre's cancellation and amendment rules.
4. Check the Statement of Entry as soon as it arrives: name, date of birth, candidate details, syllabus, option and every component.
5. Report any error immediately. Cambridge charges for late amendments and may not accept very late changes.
6. Use the centre—not Cambridge customer service—as the first contact for timetable, venue, access arrangements, results, reviews of marking and certificates.

Cambridge's India FAQ also warns that it does not combine subjects from different series into one Cambridge statement of results. If a receiving board or institution needs all required subjects in one sitting or one marksheet, ask whether separate statements are acceptable before splitting exams across March, June and November.

Step 6: plan the learning and evidence separately

Registering for an exam does not supply teaching. Build the study plan from the current syllabus, assessment objectives, specimen material, examiner reports and past papers. For science, practical reasoning still matters even where an Alternative to Practical paper is available. For speaking or practical components, reproduce the actual format rather than studying only content notes.

Keep a private portfolio of work, reading, projects and practical experience even when Cambridge does not require it. It will not alter the Cambridge grade, but a receiving school or overseas application may ask how an independently educated learner studied. Do not claim that a portfolio cures an AIU equivalence issue; those are different questions.
