A child who has spent years building things and observing nature understands the *concepts* deeply, even if they learn the specific academic terminology later.

When it is time for formal exams, unschooled teenagers shift gears. They use YouTube (channels like CrashCourse or Indian educators like Physics Wallah), online simulations (like PhET Interactive Simulations), and prep books. For the practical exam component required by boards like NIOS, students typically register with a study centre and complete the required lab practicals there in the months leading up to the exam.

Do I need a science degree to unschool my child?
No. You need curiosity. If your child asks a question you don't know ("Why is the sky blue?"), the best answer is, "I don't know, let's find out together." You are modeling how to learn, not acting as an encyclopedia.
Are online science simulations good enough?
Yes, especially for older teens studying complex physics or chemistry. Tools like PhET Simulations are used by universities globally and allow students to safely experiment with variables that are impossible to replicate in a home lab.
How do they do the practical exams for 10th and 12th board exams?
If taking NIOS or IGCSE as a private candidate, the student is attached to an exam centre or school. They will typically attend practical sessions at that school’s lab before the final practical examination to familiarise themselves with the formal equipment.
