If your own "nothing mathematical happened today" actually looked like a child negotiating a fair split of biscuits between siblings, that counted — it just did not look like school, so it did not register as countable. It is a lived example of exactly the mechanism Gray describes.
Verdict: plausible and observationally supported, not proven. File it as "credible hypothesis with anecdotal backing," not "settled fact."
Question 2: Does skipping formal maths instruction cause permanent academic harm?
This is where we wanted the strongest evidence available, and we found it: Robert Kunzman and Milton Gaither's "Homeschooling: A Comprehensive Survey of the Research," published in Other Education: The Journal of Educational Alternatives (2020 update of a 2013 original). This is a synthesis of more than 246 academic journal articles, theses and book chapters, conducted by independent academic researchers — not a homeschooling-advocacy organisation with a stake in the answer.
Their finding: academic achievement research on homeschooling is genuinely mixed, and is methodologically limited because families who choose to homeschool or unschool self-select — they are not a random, comparable cross-section of the schooled population. Sit with that, because it cuts both ways. The confident relative who says your child will "never be able to do maths" has no solid evidence behind that claim. The confident unschooling-forum post promising your child will "naturally" reach Class 10 fluency by following their curiosity has no solid evidence behind it either. Verdict: the "permanent harm" claim is not supported by the evidence. Neither is its opposite — "unschooling guarantees better outcomes." This is the single most important finding in this entire investigation, because it means most of what gets asserted confidently on both sides of this debate is overstating what is actually known.
Question 3: Can an unschooled child in India actually sit a board exam later?
We checked this against the boards' own official material. According to NIOS's official site (nios.ac.in), the board accepts direct registration without requiring prior school enrollment, and its On-Demand Exam system lets a candidate sit subjects — including Mathematics — when they are ready, rather than forcing everyone into one fixed annual cycle. Class 10 registration requires a minimum age of 14 (reported as on 31 July of the academic year — verify the current NIOS circular, as age cut-offs can be revised); Class 12 requires a prior Class 10 pass and minimum age 15 (again, confirm against the live circular).
CBSE, per its own published documents, works differently: its private-candidate category is generally not open to students with zero prior CBSE or board enrollment record. A child who has never been formally enrolled anywhere typically cannot register as a CBSE private candidate. Question 4: Is the "20 hours to learn years of maths" story actually true?
This is the single most repeated statistic in self-directed education circles, so we traced it to its source. It comes from Daniel Greenberg, co-founder of Sudbury Valley School, writing on the school's own blog in a post titled "What? No Curriculum?" Greenberg describes teaching roughly six years' worth of conventional arithmetic-through-algebra content to a self-selected, motivated group of students in about 20 contact hours spread over 20 weeks, using an 1898 arithmetic primer.
Two caveats, both load-bearing. First: this is the school's own account, published on its own blog — an institution describing its own programme, the same way a school prospectus describes itself favourably. Second: it describes a self-selected, already-motivated subgroup of teenagers who wanted that maths for a specific reason (often college admission), not an average or randomly chosen child. Gray's Psychology Today piece carries a similar story secondhand — a Sudbury Valley staff member's account that motivated teens needing SAT-level maths for college reportedly picked it up in roughly 20-30 hours of focused study. That is a single anecdotal account, not a study.
Verdict: a real, documented account — not a fabrication — but not generalisable. It shows compression is possible for a motivated learner with a clear goal. It is not a timeline to plan a child's education around.
Question 5: Do unschooling families actually avoid all structure, as the stereotype suggests?
We looked for counter-evidence in the same ThePrint reporting that supplied the Kaur and Sharma examples, and found a clear one: Kavita Dubey in Delhi pulled her 15-year-old daughter Divya out of conventional school specifically to prepare for NEET, the medical entrance exam — and added NIOS enrollment plus online coaching to do it. The moment a concrete, high-stakes goal appeared, the family added exactly the structure that goal demanded.
Compare that to Santosh Sharma's household in Bhopal, where her son Jai — currently around a Class 7 level — has had no fixed curriculum for two years, a genuinely lower-structure case. Both families are real, current, and identify with unschooling-adjacent approaches; one has added exam-specific structure, one has not yet. Neither is "the" right answer. The pattern across the available reporting is closer to "structure gets added on demand" than "structure never happens."
Verdict: the stereotype does not hold as a blanket rule. Structure is not absent by ideology — it is applied selectively, often triggered by a specific goal. Question 6: How big is the unschooling movement in India, actually?
Honestly: nobody knows the real number, and we want to be upfront that this is a genuine data gap rather than something we are hedging unnecessarily. ThePrint's Kritika Sharma reported in May 2023 that a Delhi-NCR homeschooling WhatsApp group grew from roughly 60 members before the pandemic to about 150 by 2023 — but that is one informal, regional group, not a national figure, and the report states explicitly that no official government count of homeschooled or unschooled children exists in India. Question 7: Are structured curiosity-led programmes a credible middle ground?
For families who like Gray's "numerate household" idea but want it delivered as a programme rather than built from scratch at home — often because they do not have the bandwidth to be that numerate household themselves — a small set of Indian providers aim at this gap. On the rating, which is a separate matter: that same Ezyschooling listing has shown a 4.0-out-of-5 score drawn from a single verified parent review. A sample of one is far too small to function as evidence the method works, however genuine that one review may be — so do not read the rating as proof of outcomes. The investigation's bottom line
Stacking the answers together: informal maths learning in a numerate household is a credible, observationally-backed idea but not proven. The "permanent harm from skipping drills" fear is not supported by the best independent research available, and neither is its opposite. A board credential pathway genuinely exists through NIOS, with a real structural gap at CBSE that catches many families off guard. Rapid catch-up is documented but describes motivated outliers, not an average timeline. And real Indian unschooling families add structure deliberately, not never.
